If You're Up There - lyrics & song

Bob Leggitt | Monday, 8 August 2011

If You're Up There is a mock gospel track, which questions some of the inconsistencies in the conventional theory of God, and perhaps even more than that, questions the hypocrisy of our behaviour when we extol Biblical morality then do the exact opposite.

I wrote the song when I was spoofing a psychic on a now closed forum - hence the "very psychic Bob Leggitt" line in the evangelical monologue as the start...

LYRICS

CHORUS

Oh, if you’re up there. Oh, if you’re everywhere.
Why do I find you so hard to find? Oh Lord, why am I so blind?

FIRST VERSE

Jesus saved us from a circle of sin,
Just like the one we seem to be living in.
I was created in an image of you,
But nothing in my CV is even vaguely true.
If you wanted me giving my love to only one girl,
Why do you make me wanna get off with the whole damn world?
And if we’re sure the afterlife is such fun,
Why do we get so scared when someone points a gun?

CHORUS

Oh, if you’re up there. Oh, if you’re everywhere.
Why do I find you so hard to find? Oh Lord, why am I so blind?

SECOND VERSE

We say the bible taught us how to behave.
To share and give and not to want or crave.
We take a thousand loaves and fishes galore.
We eat, and nothing is left, and we want more.
And I look past the moon and the stars and I see there’s no purpose in prayer.
I’m living in heaven and hell, I’m living in heaven and hell, I’m living in heaven and hell, I’m already there.

CHORUS

Oh, if you’re up there. Oh, if you’re everywhere.
Why do I find you so hard to find? Oh Lord, why am I so blind?
