Spend More Time - lyrics and song

Bob Leggitt | Friday 14 October 2011

Spend More Time is an early '80s-style reggae track, which started as an exploration of our tendency to spend our lives doing things we hate, and then squandering the rewards on rubbish we don't really need. Notably, the track was recorded using an early version of the Rawgan virtual organ, now available as a freeware download via The Rawgan page. Most of the other instrument sounds come from hardware synths, but there's also some real guitar - a Fender Telecaster.

THE LYRICS

VERSE

Life’s too short to be in a jam
Morning gridlock, stuck behind a filthy van
I’m not cut out for the nine to five
Evening studies, and holidays that don’t arrive
I’m so pissed off with the rat race
Forcing smiles ‘til I pull the muscles in my face
A great escape takes vision, but only one decision

CHORUS

I’m gonna spend more time with my love

VERSE

The rat race gives you a cash reward
And takes it back in return for crap you can’t afford
You life’s so packed full of emptiness
Grand delusion, overwhelming mental stress
You can’t look down ‘cos you’re too high
The fall would kill you, but you can never reach the sky
Step back in from the balcony
Use the stairs, it’s simple when you see

CHORUS

You gotta spend more time with your love

VERSE

When this system’s forgotten you
Get your own back, forget the system too
When the world ignores all the good you do
That’s a sign it was really meant for you
The egotist has a hard time
A life of struggle, spirals of decilne
Step back out of the frying pan
Relax - you’ll probably find you can.
